What is opera?
The Oxford English dictionary tells us that opera is, ‘A dramatic work in one or more acts, set to music for singers and instrumentalists.’ Simply put, opera – the Italian word for ‘work’ - is a story told through words and music.

Glossary of Opera Terms
- A capella:
- Literally, "in the chapel." In the operatic context, this is choral music sung without instrumental accompaniment
- Act:
- A section of an opera used by the composer to divide the work into parts, often with breaks for the audience in between
- Aria:
- Literally "air" in Italian. An accompanied song for solo voice
