NZ Opera History
Jenůfa
Janáček
This famous Glyndebourne Festival production premiered in 1989 and was described as “one of the greatest theatre experiences in the entire history of Glyndebourne.” Ever since, Jenůfa’s ability to deeply engage audiences has earned its reputation as an opera of formidable power! A Glyndebourne Festival production. September/October 2008.
Madama Butterfly
Puccini
Love and honour resonate with thunderous force in Puccini’s tender love story between a Japanese geisha and her naval officer as Japan opened up to the West and the 20th century. One of the world’s best-loved operas, Puccini’s masterpiece contains many of the most recognisable tunes in opera. A New Zealand Opera production. April/May 2013, July/August 2015
Carmen
BIZET
Vital and dangerous, Carmen will be free at any cost, setting the path to the opera’s gripping conclusion. This production by Lindy Hume – well known here for her brilliantly theatrical productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Rigoletto and La cenerentola – is sexy and sensual with all the things you would expect from Bizet’s ravishing opera. (June/July 2017)
NZ’s National Opera Company
New Zealand Opera is the face of professional opera in Aotearoa. Our goal is to bring human stories, glorious music and the passion of opera to all. Every year, we produce three mainstage productions in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
The company was formed in 2000 with the merger of the National Opera of Wellington (Wellington) and Opera New Zealand (Auckland), forming New Zealand's first fully professional national opera company. In 2012, it merged again with Southern Opera in Christchurch.
We have offices in these three cities and a technical centre in Onehunga, Auckland, where new productions are created and rehearsals take place. It also houses many costumes and sets from previous productions, along with wardrobe and set building workshops.
